Introduction to Animation Course

Class size: Limit 12

Level: Introduction

Prerequisites: None

Course Description:

Students will be introduced to various animation techniques, including painting on class, paper

cutouts, and paper puppets, drawing, sand animation and clay. Students will be given

assignments that help them develop the techniques and learn the basic principles of animation.

This course will be taught as a 4-week intensive.

Classes will be held twice a week for 1.5 hours during July in the Summer of 2023.

Materials required by students: A phone with a camera and Stop Motion App

Advanced Animation Course - Stop Motion Puppets

Class size: Limit 12

Level: Advanced

Prerequisites: Introduction to Animation or permission by instructor

Course Description:

This course will further develop skills and animation techniques taught in the Introduction to Animation course. Students will learn the fundamentals of animation through the design and build of stop motion puppets. Each technique will be taught, from plasticine characters to wire armatures. Students will develop their own projects consisting of either shorts or a longer animation series. Critiques will take place as the students work. This course will be taught as a 5 week intensive.

Classes will be held twice a week for 1.5 hours during August in the Summer of 2023.

Instructor scholarly and creative interests:

Special guest instructor and EWoW Alum, Maddy Stevens, is a stop motion animator and crafter of many other mediums, including illustration, web design, graphic design, marketing, and sewing. Maddy has been a business owner at MissMaddyMakes since she was 14, creating cat hats and costumes. She graduated from College of The Atlantic in 2023 with a BFA in Human Ecology. She is pursuing a self-designed major in stop-motion animation.
